This reunion of the direct descendants of Peter and Laura Weston Adams is significant in that it reconciles three families: Tally Sr., Celia and Adelle who for the fifth time are coming and reuniting as one big family. Some of us must discover, rediscover and renew relationships for the first time ever!

Many of the memories and experiences we have had never included some of our relatives while growing and developing in this family.

This is how our history unfolded: 

            Peter was born on the McLaughlin farm in 1834 to a slave by name of Lucy. Historically, we know that many slaves assumed their Master’s last name which would explain why he originally had the McLaughlin last name. This also allowed identification by other slave owners.

            Peter is believed to have been fathered by a plantation owner by the name of Joel Adams. Later in life, he went to work for the Adams’ on what is now Haynes/Adams Road near the Grovewood place off Congaree Road. Peter is believed to have to half brothers: Robert Nixon and Valentine McLaughlin. From Peter’s union with his first wife-Lucy Boyd (1870) three were born: Mary, Amy, and William Adams. He married his second wife-Lydia (1888), but had no children before death. Finally, he married Laura Weston and three children were born and Tally, Sr. (who married Lucille Herbert); Celia (who married Willie Brown) and Adelle (who married King Adams).

             As you study each family tree you will understand where everyone fits in and how each of us are related to one another. Well, that’s all folks unless you have the rest of the untold story

            While visiting the Grovewood plantation some years ago, the question was put to a then-living relative of the estate:  “Do you know anything about the life of Peter Adams?” She responded with a laugh and said, “If these walls could talk.”
